Solaris is a 2002 film directed by Steven Soderbergh based on Stanislaw Lem's novel Solaris (1961). The meditative psychological drama takes place mostly aboard a space station orbiting a fictional planet. The film borrows heavily from Tarkovsky's 1972 film. Chris struggles with questions of Solaris' motivation, his beliefs, memories and reconciling what was lost with an opportunity for a second chance.
Lem criticized the film for its departure from his intentions: "As Solaris' author I shall allow myself to repeat that I only wanted to create a vision of a human encounter with something that certainly exists, in a mighty manner perhaps, but cannot be reduced to human concepts, ideas or images. This is why the book was entitled Solaris and not Love in Outer Space."
